Many couples enter divorce with a very limited understanding of divorce law, which is understandable, but this can be extremely limiting when it comes to navigating the difficult process. Without basic knowledge about the legal process, conflict can quickly increase between the two parties, and the process can become emotionally taxing and unnecessarily expensive. In fact, the state of Minnesota recommends that couples who are beginning the divorce process complete a family law basics course that can provide important information and can empower both parties to help control the legal outcomes of your divorce. AMS Mediation of Burnsville, MN offers the two recommended courses, both of which are four hours in length.

Parenting And Divorce Education, MN

The first course, entitled “A Toolkit for Navigating Your Legal Process” focuses on providing basic education about the legal process of divorce as well as how other factors that are outside the legal realm can influence the process. This course can help you minimize the emotional and financial cost of the divorce process. Topics that this course covers include stress and grieving the loss of your marriage, the emotions of divorce and/or separating, legal options, information about important things to consider related to property division, spousal and/or child support, and creating successful parenting plans.

The second course, “A Toolkit for Successful Separate Parenting,” gives you the tools you will need to be able to be an effective parent (and co-parent) after a divorce. Topics that you can expect to learn about include the impact of divorce and conflict on your kids, various needs and perspectives based on age, tips for talking to your kids about your divorce, healthy behaviors, what to avoid, and best practices. In addition, this course goes over elements of a healthy parenting environments, as well as conflict management techniques and effective communication skills.
