As you are keenly aware, there are many changes that come up after a divorce has been settled.  Once your divorce becomes official, your relationship shifts, but does not end, particularly if you share children.  In the months and years after a divorce many significant changes can occur.  A parent may change jobs and need to relocate, dramatically altering the parenting time agreement, or one parent may remarry and you suddenly have to adjust to a new dynamic.  AMS Mediation of Burnsville, MN, offers a wide variety of parenting and divorce mediation services that can help you and your family navigate and solve any number of difficult changes after a divorce is settled.

Handling Changes Post-Divorce

If you find yourself in a situation where your ex-spouse’s significant other is interfering with your parenting dynamic, you should take some time to think through a plan for communicating clearly and without anger or judgment.  Here are some tips for managing this situation or another significant change that comes up after a divorce:

  • Deal directly with the co-parent: If your ex’s significant other is interfering with your parenting plan or intercepting communication between you and your ex-spouse, it is perfectly acceptable to ask to speak directly with your ex-spouse regarding all things related to your children. It is reasonable to expect to communicate primarily with your ex, rather than with your ex-husband’s new wife or ex-wife’s new husband.
  • Use clear communication: Clear communication and clear expectations are some of the best strategies for eliminating problems related to child custody issues and/or a parenting plan.  Do not be afraid to be open and honest about your questions and concerns.
  • Get help when you need it: If clear communication and working directly with your ex does not work, then it may be time to seek the help of a neutral third party to help you sort out the issue at hand.  A mediator can be hired at any time after a divorce to facilitate communication regarding parenting time or a child custody issue that cannot be resolved by the parents.  This is often much easier than going through the court system for every issue that comes up.
