Divorce Trends So Far In 2022As we make our way out of the global pandemic, all of our lives are undoubtedly changed in some way. COVID has impacted our financial security, our jobs, our children’s education, our shopping habits, and the amount of time spent at home. So, it makes sense that the pandemic has also had an impact on how we navigate divorce. Here are some interesting divorce trends we are noticing in 2022

Alternative dispute resolution: The pandemic forced many of us to look for alternative ways to get things done in many areas of our lives. Divorce is no different. Rather than spending time and money on divorce attorneys to litigate your divorce case, many couples opted for an alternative dispute resolution strategy like divorce mediation to resolve the outstanding issues like child custody, division of property and child/spousal support. This reduces stress, reduces the financial burden of the process and allows you to move forward with your life more quickly. During COVID, there were many restrictions on in person court hearings and the schedules quickly got backed up, making litigation take even longer to complete. Alternative dispute resolution gives you flexibility of scheduling and is encouraged by the Minnesota courts.

Virtual options for resolving conflict: Another huge trend that has been a benefit of COVID is the movement to virtual meetings. Many of us are now working from home more and as meetings have migrated to zoom or other online formats. Divorce mediation can also be completed virtually equally effectively as in person sessions, with less stress and hassle. AMS Mediation has shifted its mediation session to virtually in many cases as our clients prefer the flexibility and comfort of being in their own environment and not having to sit face to face with their ex.

Certainty about decisions: The last few years have been a time of reflection for many. Our staff at AMS Mediation has found that many couples are now very certain that they are ready to move forward with their divorce. This certainty can help the process move faster and more smoothly toward resolution.
