Key Factors in a DivorceDivorce is a pivotal moment in your life – and it can certainly be one of the most stressful and difficult decisions you will ever make. If you and your spouse have decided to move forward with divorce, there are likely many reasons that you can point to that led you to this decision. Infidelity, financial stress, and communication issues are some of the most common catalysts for divorce. If you and your spouse have made the difficult decision that divorce is the best next step for you and your family, you want to keep some key factors in mind as you navigate the process.

  1. Children: Your children did not ask for a divorce and their lives will change because of it. You must understand this and work hard to make decisions about your divorce that protect your children and keep them a priority. This can mean working through the anger that you feel for your spouse so that you can improve communication after divorce in order to co-parent successfully. It can also mean making a commitment to not speaking negatively about your spouse to your children. Your children will need your love and support during and after divorce.
  2. Cost of Divorce: Depending on how you decide to settle your divorce, divorce can be extremely expensive. Litigating your divorce in the court system can cost as much as $15,000. Mediation is a much less expensive option, generally costing between two and ten times less than traditional litigation.
  3. Vision for your Future: You have likely spent countless hours trying to save your marriage. Divorce is difficult but it is a chance to finally look forward toward a new future, rather than backward at a failing marriage. This hope can help couples find their way forward.
