Marriage And Divorce Rates Drop During COVID-19 PandemicIf you were planning a wedding between March of 2020 and summer of 2021, you likely had to reschedule it or change your plans significantly because of COVID-19. With state guidelines on how many people can safely gather indoors, many wedding venues are simply deemed unsafe for a traditional wedding. What you might not realize, however, is that in addition to their being fewer than normal weddings, COVID-19 has also caused fewer than average divorces. Divorce rates are down significantly as well during the pandemic. Unfortunately, this is not likely because couples are suddenly happier together.

Divorce During COVID-19

The reality of the pandemic is that there are some practical reasons that couples might decide to stay together right now. The first reason is largely financial. Many individuals have lost jobs or found themselves taking a pay cut during the COVID-19 pandemic. This economic pressure makes divorce even more difficult, because the process does cost money. In addition to the actual monetary costs of the divorce process, you also have to consider that splitting your household and living in two locations also costs more. Couples may decide that the financial and health risks are simply too high right now to make a big life change.

What some couples might not realize is that you can settle the terms of your divorce with mediation rather than going through the traditional court system. So, instead of having to pay attorney fees and wait for time on the schedule of a judge, you can make the major decisions regarding your divorce with the support and guidance of a mediation. Mediation is significantly less expensive than litigation, allowing you to resolve your case more quickly with less of a financial and emotional burden. In addition, you can now complete the entire mediation process online, without even entering a building. Virtual mediation services have become very popular during COVID-19 giving you the flexibility and safety you need to complete the process on your terms.
