Practical Advice For Divorcing in 2020In a year like no other, 2020 has brought its fair share of uncertainty, stress and fear to families all over the country. With families spending much more time in their homes together, conflict is sometimes unavoidable. If you have contemplated divorce in the past but are feeling more certain than ever that it is the best path forward for you and your family, here are some practical tips for navigating your divorce in 2020:

1. Divorce is a very difficult decision to make and it can be financially stressful for both parties. As soon as possible, begin to save money where you can. These extra dollars will be very helpful as you think about an upcoming move or added expenses that come from separating from one house to two. Divorce mediation is a much less expensive way to settle the terms of your divorce and can save you significant time, stress and money.

2. Keep all of your documentation in a notebook: The divorce process produces a lot of paperwork. Put that paperwork all in one place so that you do not have to search for it when you need it. Keeping track of your documentation will help you significantly during the mediation or litigation process.

3. Communicate openly: To the extent you can, communicate openly about your plans for completing most interactions virtually. Divorce mediation can now be handled online so that you can move forward with the process in a safe way. You can now also file your divorce paperwork with the courts virtually as well.

4. Keep your priorities in focus: Divorce can bring out the worst in many of us. It can be helpful to really keep your focus on the things that are most important to you during the process. Define those priorities as soon as you can – the wellbeing of your children, making the transition financially, keeping your relationship amicable, etc.
