Divorce can leave you feeling overwhelmed, sad and like your life is out of control. Your sense of normal shifts quickly as you consider separating your joint possessions and perhaps moving your family. You may feel specific stress over explaining this major life change to your children and your other family members. Traditional litigation only compounds this sense of chaos, as you are forced to put major decisions about your life and your future in the hands of divorce attorneys and a judge. There is another way that can help you regain this sense of control, make sound decisions about your future and protect your financial resources. Divorce mediation can help you regain this control for you and your family in the following ways:

1. Flexible scheduling: Rather than having to race around to meetings that your attorney sets, to a court date that may not be at a time that works for you, mediation allows you to set the schedule. You should count on 2-3 mediation sessions total and they can be scheduled several weeks apart at a time that is convenient for you and your ex. This cuts out a huge stressor and gives you control over your own time.
2. Less of a financial burden: The financial burden of divorce contributes to a feeling of stress and lack of control. The costs for mediation are between 20-50% cheaper than litigation, which can make a huge difference for you and your ex as you look ahead to a life with separate households.
3. Make your own decisions: The most important thing to understand about mediation is that you are actually empowered to make decisions about your family and your future. You know your family best, and certainly better than divorce attorneys and a judge, so you are in the best position to make decisions about your divorce settlement and your future that have the best chance for success. Your mediator will not make decisions in your case but guide you in discussion, answer your questions and explain the divorce mediation process from start to finish.
